Sibiu’s Surroundings are situated in south of Transylvania on foot of Sibiului Mountains. The inhabitans of villages from Sibiu-, Hunedoara-, Brasov counties live in contact zone between hill and mountain on theold austro-hungarian border in south of Transylvania. This area has agronomy character, the villagers have the main occupation animals’ breeding. For long time ago the shepherds lead the flocks seeking rich pastures till over the Danube towards Constantinopol, over the Tisa in Poland, and towards east till Caucas, proving much tenacity and wish to know these places’ specification. In this way, in villages could be felt the different cultures’ impact. The well-known shepherds center in this zone was: Salistea – an old administrative place, villagers’ spiritual centre, Orlat, Rasinari – old ortodoxe episcopal residence on the centre of distance between Sibiu and Paltinis, Poiana Sibiului – a village well-founded later, which became very soon an important center of the shepherds. Between the personalities its are remarked: Emil Cioran, Octavian Goga and 6 romanian academicians natives of Saliste. On these surroundings you could find: old churches, museums (Museum from Sibiel – the biggest “icons on window” collection from Europe, Village’s Museum from Rasinari – ceramical pieces, painted furniture, householding and craftsman pieces, Museum from Gales – national costume, Ortodoxe Parish’s Museum – contain pieces and old cult books and Culture of Saliste Museum – documents, bocks, photos, memorial houses and traditional countryman constructions. In time, Sibiu’s Surroundings became an important point of the romanian rural tourism, here developing numerous pensions which could offer the necessary facilities for a pleasant accommodation. The typical peasant atmosphere, traditions’ intact keeping, customs, villagers’ hospitality, recreation and hiking’s possibilities in mountains of surroundings, enlarge these places activity. Other touristical attractions from area: Cetatea Scurta (Short Fortress) from Orlat (builded in 1317), Moara de hartie (Paper factory) from Orlat (1524 – the oldest from South-East of Europe), Children’s house from Orlat (1921 – the oldest from Romania), Dacica Fortress near Tilisca, Church-Fortress from Cristian (1495), Fortified church from Dobarca (XIII. Cent.), Fortress from Calnic (1250).
